It is fitting, given the reluctance of the Youth’s Companion to add any illustrations, that the first one published was entitled “The Evil of Theft.” The tiny image shows a boy cowering in a jail cell as a man approaches him. Though the Companion begins to use illustrations in this issue, it does so in a way that maintains its strict adherence to teaching religion rather than amusing its readers.
