SAMUEL GRISWOLD GOODRICH, Peter Parley’s Book of Bible Stories, Boston: Munroe & Francis, 1851
Goodrich believed that it was important to teach children in ways that would not leave them with “grotesque fancies and absurd opinions.” In the preface to this book, he insists that children need age-appropriate access to Bible stories, and he urges his young readers to “make the Bible your constant companion, and look upon it as a good and wise friend, that, if listened to, will guide you to happiness here, and bliss hereafter.”
