This page is a copperplate inlay of the five men Rufus Griswold, the editor of early collections of American writing, deemed the best poets in America at the time of publication, and Charles Sprague is one of them. As a result of this honor, the poets were dubbed the “Copperplate Five.” It is amazing to think that, in the roughly 135 years since Charles Sprague’s death, he has gone from celebrity to total anonymity.
